
June 3 Reading and Prompt
Please read Chapter 29 and “Writing in Response 1” (provided in email). Please have your textbooks or a solution for getting your reading by Monday (sharing with a friend, pdf.ing another’s book, etc.)
We will be discussing “Story of an Hour” and “A Sorrowful Woman” on Monday as well.
HW: On your blog, post a movie trailer to a movie you have seen that you think tells an interesting/engaging story (Youtube is rife with such videos). Describe the narrative of the movie in terms of plot and genre. Address the following questions:

What is the central conflict?

Who is the protagonist(s)? What do he/she want?

What is at stake for the protagonist in the conflict?

What is the obstacle preventing achieving this goal?

What are the main events?

How is the conflict resolved?

Is the protagonist ultimately successful?

What is the final impact on the protagonist?
Discussion Notes:
* The three logical appeal in rehtroic :
1-Eatho: give credibility for the writer
2-Logo: Using rational reasoning
3-Patho: Appeal to the emotions
The difference between claim and opinion:
Claim : It can have supported evidence or proof
Opinion : It is usually not based on supported information.
What element a paragraph should have ?
Every paragraph should have topic and thesis statement.

Lecture note :
Literary analysis: It has an element of creativity but not completely creative.
* Literary analysis essay should have :
-claim ( Avoid using I think, I have ..etc)
– Thesis : what topic is going to be discussed in the paper.
-Sub-claims: support the larger claims
-Close reading: Understanding the plot, character , and the writer point of view
* literary is ambiguous , open to interpretation, there is no right or wrong answer to it.
Interpret where the ambiguity lie when close reading.
Avoid issue that are already discussed.
Explain what something worth attention and the significance of it.
Selecting Title:
– It is very important to know that it is not the title of the story.
-It should give the reader a hint of what the paper discuss.
-Use appropriate title. It must drag the attention of the reader.
Literary devices:
1- Structure of the plot
2-role of the character
3-role of the narrator
-role of setting( it has mode and it affects the character)
5- role of symbolism( focus on the symbol)
6- point of view
7- development of theme( track the evolution of the theme)
8- style , tone , irony
* use textual support as an evidence to logical support a claim.
*Identify the academic:Universal academia , assume that the audience has some level of understanding.
Establishing the rhetorical situation:( writing for a particular reason targeting a particular audience)
1- scrutinize the author’s life
2 The historical moment ( what happened at specific time that may have affected the story)
3- the role of culture , values , religion ( discuss the relevance of cultural aspects and its impact on the story)
Using quotation:
-Insert quotation to use them as support “textual support”
– use to support argument.
– don’t over used them ( no more than three quotes in one page)
Concluding a literary analysis:
– restate the thesis
– don’t use first person “I”
– remind the reader of what the overall objectives of the paper are.
